Diagnostic and Preventive Dental Care

We offer outstanding diagnostics and preventive dental care that creates a long-lasting foundation for excellent oral health. Our preventive dentistry is designed to treat patients of all ages, too.

What Is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventive dentistry allows Dr. Erin Macko, your dentist in Newark, DE, to spot emergency dental health issues before they turn into painful, costly, or time-consuming dental health problems.

In concert with the American Dental Association, we recommend two checkups and two dental health cleanings per year. This schedule has been shown to reduce your risks for dental health conditions. If you are diagnosed with an oral health condition like periodontal disease, your schedule will be more customized to address this issue.

Remember, discovering emerging dental health issues can be the key to prevention in the future!

Our knowledge, experience, and technology allow us to target your problem areas and create a treatment plan that will best serve your dental needs.

Your preventive checkup includes:

  • A thorough exam of your teeth and gums
  • An evaluation of any oral health changes
  • An oral cancer screening
  • X-rays if needed

Our Philosophies and Capabilities

Our diagnostic and preventive care capabilities make it easy to stay on top of your dental health. We are knowledgeable about and experienced with the many threats to your teeth and gums.

We also capitalize on the latest in dental equipment and techniques to target these threats and make accurate diagnoses that improve the speed and effectiveness of our treatments.

Dr. Macko wants you to have the analysis, care, and treatment you need to quickly and effectively manage the health of your smile.

Consistent visits to the dentist are important because they allow us to keep an up-to-date portfolio on the progress of your teeth and gums and to note any oral health changes between your dental visits.

Regular dental cleanings and preventive treatments help to supplement your at-home routine, and it gives us the chance to remove the bacteria and other debris often missed through brushing and flossing alone.

At Erin M. Macko, DDS, we provide gentle, thorough preventive care because it makes it easier to diagnose your oral health conditions and to combat problems before they get bigger.

We provide access to excellent diagnostic and preventive dental care because we value your smile. Your family should always have the opportunity to receive quality preventive care as well as honest, accurate assessments about the state of their dental health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Prevention is a key component in the fight against gum disease. A consistent at-home dental hygiene routine (regular brushing and flossing), when combined with biannual dental examinations and cleanings, can be a great way to prevent the build-up of the bacteria, plaque and gingivitis that lead to periodontitis.

A proper diet can also help with gum disease prevention and serve to supplement your existing dental care. We offer dental health and nutrition info and counseling that can help you make informed decisions about your diet and your dental care.

We can also remove and repair the damage caused by gum disease. Our professional periodontics treatments remove the plaque and gingivitis that can cause abnormal bleeding and swelling in your gums, helping abate the effects of gum disease and quickly putting your dental health on the road to recovery.

Bad breath can often be attributed to incorrect brushing, as well as the lack of a good flossing habit. Brushing without flossing only cleans about half of your teeth's surface, leaving bacteria and food debris that can turn into a source of bad breath. Gum disease and gingivitis are also known to be causes, and special treatment is often needed to eliminate their impact.

Dr. McCann can evaluate your dental health and determine any source of dental infection that may be causing your bad breath. If dental issues are ruled out, you may be in need of a medical evaluation, as certain problems can lead to halitosis (i.e. diabetes). Certain medications may also cause bad breath.

The number of X-rays you receive generally depends on how prone you are to dental problems. Most people don't require X-rays during every examination. Some receive X-rays once a year, others once every two years, etc.

We use X-rays only when diagnostically necessary or when it is required to protect your dental health.
