Frequently Asked Questions

How can we help you?

We provide many quality dental treatments and services to our patients. Your dental health is our highest priority, and our care and advice can help guide you through a lifetime of bright and healthy smiles.

In order to better serve you, we've included a list of commonly-asked questions below.

We offer nitrous oxide analgesia (laughing gas), which is the safest anti-anxiety treatment available. Unlike taking a pill, the effect is worn off as soon as the appointment is over, and you can drive yourself home. It's safe and effective for children as well.

Teeth grinding, or clenching, is often times the cause of jaw pain, headaches and fractured and worn teeth. If you believe that your headaches could be a symptom of teeth grinding or clenching, schedule an appointment with our office today.  Dr. McCann can quickly determine if you have a problem with grinding and provide custom-fit night guards to help mitigate its effects and ease your pain.

No. Relying soley on a "toothpaste for sensitive teeth" may just mask the source of your teeth's sensitivity. The best way to help sensitive teeth is to see a dentist in order to determine the cause of the sensitivity.

Toothpaste may only temporarily disguise the problem, allowing it to get worse. A cavity, bad bite or root erosion may be the source of your teeth's sensitivity, and a desensitizing toothpaste may only help for a short period of time. A dentist, however, can help you discover the source and provide treatment options for long-term relief.

Dental Bonding

We offer several effective cosmetic treatments that can drastically improve the quality of your smile. Our bonding, teeth whitening implant-supported tooth replacements, tooth-colored restorations and complete and partial denture services are available to anyone looking for a brighter and fuller set of teeth.

We also deliver high quality preventive and diagnostic services to help to you maintain a clean, healthy, beautiful and long-lasting smile.

Dental Crowns

  1. There are several factors used to determine whether removable dentures, fixed (cemented) bridges, or implants are the best tooth replacement option for you. We use in-depth examination and analysis to determine which treatment method is best for your dental health and your smile. We will then make recommendations based on our analysis, providing a thorough explanation and answering all your questions and concerns.

A lost crown is generally not a serious emergency, but if you still have it, you should get it recemented. The sooner you do this the better. The absence of a protective crown can lead to increased sensitivity and pain.

If you were able to find the missing crown, store it in a safe place until you are able to see the dentist. You may also try to reapply the crown using a store-bought denture adhesive, usually thinned with water. If it seems to stay in securely , this is still a very temporary solution; you don't want to swallow it (don't chew on it).

Though only a temporary solution, this can provide protection to your tooth and limit sensitivity and pain until your next appointment. Meanwhile, if you can brush it comfortably do so, making sure you do this without toothpaste, which can irritate it.

For esthetics, especially of the front teeth, all-porcelain crowns would be the best option, but some patients (eg. those who clench or have very worn teeth) may need the stronger porcelain-veneered-over-gold crowns. Even gold crowns are excellent when the tooth is not visible.

Dental Implants & Dental Implant Restoration

Our implant-supported tooth replacements are created to match the color, texture and natural look of your teeth. These replacements are durable and help return normal oral function and appearance to your smile.

Our tooth replacements are virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth and are resistant to the effects of diet and overuse. Learn more about our implant-supported tooth replacements by calling us today.

Dentures- Complete and Partial

Our complete dentures are fitted to rest safely and comfortably on your gumline, conforming to the unique contours of your jaw and gums. We provide strong, great-looking dentures that provide years of worry-free function and enjoyment. Eating will rarely, if ever, be a problem with our high-quality, secure sets of complete dentures.

Keep in mind that part of the fabrication includes trying them in to check the appearance. Have you ever noticed someone's dentures that look too prominent or too small for their face? This step helps you to avoid that problem.

Emergency Dentist

Call our office. We are very concerned that emergencies are seen promptly. Even on weekends and holidays, if Dr. McCann can't see you personally, our regular patients can see another dentist in our cooperative coverage group.

Diagnostic and Preventive Dental Care

The number of X-rays you receive generally depends on how prone you are to dental problems. Most people don't require X-rays during every examination. Some receive X-rays once a year, others once every two years, etc.

We use X-rays only when diagnostically necessary or when it is required to protect your dental health.

Bad breath can often be attributed to incorrect brushing, as well as the lack of a good flossing habit. Brushing without flossing only cleans about half of your teeth's surface, leaving bacteria and food debris that can turn into a source of bad breath. Gum disease and gingivitis are also known to be causes, and special treatment is often needed to eliminate their impact.

Dr. McCann can evaluate your dental health and determine any source of dental infection that may be causing your bad breath. If dental issues are ruled out, you may be in need of a medical evaluation, as certain problems can lead to halitosis (i.e. diabetes). Certain medications may also cause bad breath.

Prevention is a key component in the fight against gum disease. A consistent at-home dental hygiene routine (regular brushing and flossing), when combined with biannual dental examinations and cleanings, can be a great way to prevent the build-up of the bacteria, plaque and gingivitis that lead to periodontitis.

A proper diet can also help with gum disease prevention and serve to supplement your existing dental care. We offer dental health and nutrition info and counseling that can help you make informed decisions about your diet and your dental care.

We can also remove and repair the damage caused by gum disease. Our professional periodontics treatments remove the plaque and gingivitis that can cause abnormal bleeding and swelling in your gums, helping abate the effects of gum disease and quickly putting your dental health on the road to recovery.

Although tooth-whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes don't have much effect, there are a few effective ways to whiten teeth -- even some over-the-counter techniques can work well.

The issue is which one is best for you. We can help you choose how to get the results you want, and avoid wasting time and money on things that won't work.
